Ok, not quite tiny, but small. I love them. I love big cheeses too, but there’s something so lovely and complete about a small cheese that you and a loved one, or maybe just you could down in a sitting. I go on about it here in the Wall St. Journal. Please let me know your favorite small cheese, too. And yes babybel is great, but only really for the nice wax sculptures you can make with the coating.

My favorite small cheese is St. Marcellin, and I see it made your list too. It’s very tasty, but I think I’m most charmed by the crock it comes in. Perfect for rubber bands or earrings whose partner’s gone missing. Your article made me hungry.
Rihtaš mal? Rihtaš?
lovely post and I agree, there’s something delightful about miniature cheeses (not to mention portioned perfectly for singles & couples!)
As far as small cheeses go, my favorite lately has been Inverness from Cowgirl Creamery and Capriole’s Crocodile Tears! Both have a delicate, crumbly-but-creamy/rich texture and a distinct tinge of tang!
Please forgive this not being a ‘my favorite’ post but I’m hoping present company can probably answer my question. These days I can’t afford those tiny cheeses that cost somewhere close to $20, so I’m very happy when I find shops that sell small pieces of them for a fraction of that. I had my first taste of ‘Marcillat Munster Gerome’ this way, but unfortunately it was the first cheese I’ve ever had that was too pungent for me to enjoy. It was almost as if an ammonia smell was coming out of my nose. Could this have been that it had gone bad? Or is MMG just a very strong cheese?
Hi there, I’m sorry to just be getting back to you, but yes, i think that you probably got an overripe cheese. That’s too bad, and well worth talking to the store about. If they’re good cheesemongers, I’d think they would reimburse you in $ or in a fresher cheese. You’re right that cheese is spendy: good cheese takes milk from responsibly raised cows, the skills of an experienced cheesemaker, and time, so I look at artisanal cheese, big or small as a an occasional treat that supports a lot of good people. You’re right though that you can often get a great deal on cheeses cut from larger wheels–my fave local cheesemonger has a basket of cheese ends that’s a wonderful resource.
Thanks very much Sara for your advice and tips! I will keep on sampling those artisanal cheeses — they really are a worthwhile treat.
